The word Urinary Calculus might seem a heavy word. It means stones in the urinary tract. In Ayurvedic terminology, it is Mutrashmari, where Mutra is urine and Ashmari means stones.
The kidney stones or renal stones in the urinary tract are a solid mass made up of tiny crystals. They occur when urine salts take a solid crystal shape. The stones are found in the kidney and ureters as well. They end up blocking the urine flow and can cause kidney damage, infection, and even kidney failure.
Urinary calculus is rising by the day. It is affecting the younger population too. Knowing kidney stone symptoms and prevention is important.
Symptoms of Kidney Stones
- A sudden rush of pain in the abdomen
- Burning sensation during urination
- Decreased urine flow
- Yellow or reddish-yellow urine
- Lethargy or laziness
- Vomiting, headache, and bodyache
Dietary Tips
- Water is the best remedy to fight this ailment. Keep drinking adequate water at frequent intervals.
- Drink 350 milk or take in milk products of equivalent value daily to maintain optimal calcium level.
- Eat fibrous vegetables such as beans, green leafy vegetables, and fruits rich in vitamin C such as oranges and lemons. They have potassium citrate to prevent stone formation.
- Avoid taking colas and aerated beverages. Reduce tea and coffee as they lead to dehydration, causing salt crystallization in urine, and urinary stones.
- Reduce high-calorie foods, refined carbohydrates, and the ones with excess fats.
- Reduce eating oxalate-rich foods such as red meat and spinach.
- Avoid ready-to-eat and junk food as they increase mineral levels in the body, causing stone formation.
- Stay away from taking high protein intake or supplements.
- Doing daily exercise for about 30 minutes helps a lot in keeping kidney stones at bay.
